In 2008, at the Australian Olympic Swimming Trials, Emily became the first Australian woman to swim under one minute for the 100m Backstroke in the semi finals.  She then went on to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games with another national record swim in the finals.

At the Olympic trials Emily also set a new world record becoming the first woman to swim under 28 seconds for the 50m Backstroke; opting out of the 50m final the following day to concentrate on her record breaking 100m backstroke semi final instead.
